So It Ends With a Yummy Sunday Dinner

When I think about a traditional Sunday dinner often a roasted chicken with vegetables and rolls dances around in my head. Well, Jason (being the great chef of the house) delivered this past Sunday, although the meal was not planned. To give you the back story, let's start at the beginning.

For those of you that have been reading our blog for a while now, you know that we have had quite our fill of chicken drama at our house these past months. Unfortunately about a week and a half ago, Bella nosed the door open and got out and was able to get a hold of two more chickens (sadly it was the Silkes). We were very sad to see them go, but with Aspen in our life, suddenly it wasn't quite as upsetting as the first time (actually we were quite impressed with Bella's determined hunter instinct to get the door open enough for her to sneak out and catch dinner). So, we were down to 4.

Then, Satine/Gekko (we had to rename him can you guess what movie this lead male charactor is from) started to crow...and crow...and crow. We didn't mind much because with a newborn we were up in the early hours of the morning and it was kind of nice hearing the crowing (made us feel like we were on a farm). However, some of our neighbors didn't feel the same way. We both understood and if I was in their shoes getting woken up at 6:45am on Sunday morning by a rooster, I probably wouldn't be very happy with my neighbors either.

So the conversation about what to do with our beloved Satine/Gekko began this past weekend. We heard from some other local chicken owners to be careful if you give a rooster away because 80% of the time the rooster goes to cock fighting. Neither one of us wanted him subjected to this at all! The other 20% go to someone's Sunday dinner--bringing us back to the beginning of our post. So, we decided if we wanted to be a ranch family someday it was time to act like one.

Gekko was a great rooster and was part of the original 6 chicks we purchased back in May. Jason did all of the prepariion for the meal and in the end he was so small Jason had to run to the store and buy a Cornish game hen so we would have enough for dinner. The meat was a little tough, which was surprising considering he was so young, but I guess he was in good shape (we try to keep our chickens on a strict, healthy diet--maybe we could learn a few things from them). Check out the video of the week-- you can get an idea of what his crowing was like for our neighbors (and this wasn't even full blown crowing).

Now we are down to three, but let's hope we can at least keep these three and get some eggs out of these puppies. Considering how hot it is in Texas we would be lucky to get eggs by the end of this month, but it is probably more likely going to be October. We will keep y'all posted!
